Theatre in Education

Personal Statement of Education for Theatre.

Theatre is about change. In an ever evolving and growing world, change is here to be. Theatre provides space for exploration and expression. Within this rests the opportunity to include analytical and reflective thinking. Students learn to communicate, collaborate, nurture critical thinking and creativity through the process and understand the role art plays in our lives by doing theatre. My vision is to apply theatre such that the process leads to self discovery and empower students expression, making them life long learners.

Theatre Arts is an indispensable medium in education, as it enables students to engage and express in real-time and thereby gain an insight about the self and their environment. Participation in a theatrical experience is rewarding as it provides an opportunity for students to engage with the medium and establish a relationship with the self as well as their peers and environment.

This brings us to the idea of the theatrical experience itself and the way I see it.
I make theatre and plays because my chief objective is conflict resolution. I find the idea of performance for an hour and a half being called theatre very dated, for me it is the process of self discovery and the insight gained through the participation which plays a significant role.

Theatre also has a great potential to be a therapeutic experience and thus I will also be looking forward to working with the school counselor to use theatre as an exercise for children to resolve conflicts which are both at personal and peer level.

Physical exercise and yoga will be an important part of the program as students spend very little or no time in shaping their bodies. In fact with the advent of the digital media and with its easy accessibility, students end up spending many sedentary hours and overlook physical health and the role our bodies play in our day to day life.

Students can use their daily experiences as a motivation to express through theatre. Peers who have different points of view can use it as a stimulus to write a dialogue in the form of a script that expresses a conflict. Writing a script or performing the script as a theatre piece will help students identify a conflict. Such an exercise helps them become aware of their own strengths as well as shortcomings. Students understand through participation that altering points of view may not be right or wrong; all parties have their own views based on their own experiences.Turning a classroom topic which is related to Math or Science into a theatrical performance can help students make connections with subjects that they study. Such an experience gives students an insight about the relevance of making theatre and helps them make connections to the everyday experiences.

Having studied Arts and Design during my Post-graduate program, extensive time and thought has gone into creating a unique and highly effective teaching practice utilizing both Arts and Design, and which specifically supports the IBO learner profile. Both Arts and Design are relevant to my process of making theatre.

My theatre practice comprises of applying visuals in terms of images, photographs, and films within the context of the subject being explored. Visuals and film are used as an extension of theatre in my practice. In these unique classes, students gain the opportunity of experiencing form and content as one, which has deepened their understanding and curiosity for those subjects, supporting my personal vision of creating life-long learners through the medium of theatre.

Concepts and Ideas incorporated in my work- Voice, Relationship between Text and Performance, Body, Identity, Images, Time and Space and Digital media and how it affects relationships.
